 Strong-minded, decisive and thorough in problem-solving, those are the characteristics of Mr Dinh Hong Ky, General Director of Secoin
Having given up his job at the Commercial Affair of Vietnam Embassy in Poland, Mr Dinh Hong Ky, the general director of Secoin Co., Ltd returned to his hometown to start his career with block and tiles. After 10- year effort, his name - Dinh Hong Ky connects closely with the "King for outdoor tile"
Five years and a fortunate turning point.
Having an excellent graduation from Ha Noi University of Technology, 2 years later, he was invited to Poland to serve for Commercial Affair of Vietnam Embassy in 1990. A five-year business trip helped him to learn many precious and new things from the friendly country. To Mr Dinh Hong Ky, however, the most attractive thing is the production technology of unburnt tile that have been popular in Poland and Europe. At that time, the widely-used building material in Vietnam was burnt clay products.
The unburnt tiles made from sand, cement and limestone instead of clay. The advantageous characteristics of products over other materials are high compressive strength, good fire resistance for more than 4 hours, limiting the wall crack after painting thanks to low shrinkage, weight of 2,5 time less in comparison with tile made from burnt clay; accurate specification thanks to the industry production.
As it was not his major, he has tried his best to study and research on construction field. At the first time, he collected documents of unburnt tile markets from a lot of countries in the world. That also coincided with his father's research since 1993, Prof. Dinh Xuan Ba.
The statistics tables - result of market survey showed that unburnt materials made up more than 70% market share of American, Western European and Japanese markets, but only approximately 5 % in Vietnam. Therefore, he judged unburnt building materials as the indispensable trend of developing countries. Together with business interest inherited from the mother side, he decided to come back to native land to deploy the business plan for the material in 1995.
Vietnamese market remarked the appearance of Secoin block in 1996, terrazzo in 1998, abrasive stone in 2003, concrete roof tile in 2004, artistic tile in 2006, garden landscaping in 2007 and composite sheet in 2008.
The company has supplied equipments and technology transfer for more than 50 factories in Vietnam. Secoin's pioneer and venturesomeness have been highly appreciated by Ministry of Construction with the Golden cup for Construction trademark. The company has also received Certificate of merit of Prime Minister, Vietnam trademark Award, 2006 Vietnam Enterprise of Prestige and Quality Award, Vietnam Golden Star Award…
The business world always exists bartering and the longer a company operates, the higher value of bartering is. Mr Hong Ky's Secoin cannot be an exception. However, he proudly said that "To me, bartering is necessary and still goes abreast with Secoin, contributing to the success of Secoin"
However, in his opinion, it shouldn't be turn the business world into fierce battlefield for its existence. "In the globalization background, the business world is just a game. With the extension of knowledge economy, it is a game only for intelligent persons in order to find out the concord of benefits combined together under win-win concept instead of trampling upon others." He said.
Happiness with a great family
Mr Nguyen Trong Tan, Director of Lantabrand Company, a branch in Vietnam- an intimate friend of Mr Hong Ky made a comment that "From the first sense, Ky is a brilliant and trustworthy person. In addition, Ky is influenced by his esteemed father, Prof. Dinh Xuan Ba, a teacher cum a businessman with the strong-minded, decisive characteristics and logic thinking, and solving everything thoroughly.
Mr Ky admitted "I'm lucky to be son and colleague of my father for nearly 20 years. I have leant not only from what he has done and devoted but also from his life".
His mother told that just a few days after his birth, she had to take him in her arms and waded into field and stream in cold winter evenings to evacuate from US aircrafts. His father hurriedly took his elder sister to Lang Son for evacuating.
"The only thing my elder sister and I studied from that situation is the family love and outstanding sacrifices for children of my parents." he reminded. In such a difficult life, his father still becomes the leading professor of Hanoi University of Technology and his mother is one of the first engineers of Foreign Trade field. With a nice image of his parents, he forced himself to shoulder the bigger duties of family; that is succeeding his father's achievement without defeat.
In spite of being a general director of Secoin company with more than 500 employees, he just answered briefly "I have no secret" as being asked about his secret for his success. In fact, his friends and personnel recognize that he resembles his father in the way of human resource management; that is respecting the contribution of others. Some mistakes don't mean that his/her previous contribution turns into meaningless. Therefore, almost personnel have had strong attachment with the company.
With such thinking, he is known as the good processor of intelligence by his friends. One of his favorable sayings "Talents are those who know how to use better persons than himself"
One of his partners cum his friend, Mr Dang Duc Dung, Vice-President of Hanoi Young Business Association remarked "I extremely like Ky for his prestige and carefulness- the most important factor in both business and friendship"
Regarding to family, he said proudly that "I am so lucky to have her by my side". His parents married when their property were only an old bicycle and a watch. His parents' platonic love becomes a good imitation for him to look after the happiness of his own family. He seems to be embarrassed when being asked about the most noteworthy memory of his love, "Everything is memorable in my mind", he answered. Whenever he feels exhausted or defeated, the most effective measure to clear away stress is talking with his wife and children. His recovered belief and strength supports him to continue striving.
He informed that it is so fortunate that he and his wife work together in the company. She is now the Vice-general Director of Secoin, in charge of Foreign Market. "My wife is not only a capable coworker but also a sympathetic companion with my businessman life", he bared his heart about his dear wife.
According to 2008 plan, Secoin changes joint stock model and restructures the system of Member Company and factory into Group model.
Up to 2009, on the occasion of 20th anniversary of foundation, Secoin plan to be listed in the stock market. Moreover, Secoin will build more factories for non-burnt building materials by take-overs and M&A projects in Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh city and in foreign countries. The charter capital in 2008 increased up to 150 billions dong and in 2009, up to 200 billions dong with hundreds of billions of revenue.
With more than 20-year itinerary for building trademark, he has been acknowledged with "King for outdoor tile". Both Mr Ky and his staff are trying their best to maintain and improve their brand. |
