SECOIN: The leading un-burnt building material manufacturer in Vietnam

Recently, Prime Minister has given out decision no.567/TTG on approving the program on development of un-burnt building materials to 2020. This is very important turning point for un-burnt building materials industry in Vietnam. Industry and Commerce newspaper has interviewed Mr. DinghHong Ky – General Director of Secoin on the above-mentioned issue.

Would you please share with us how Secoin set a footstep on the road of success?

Through 21 years of development, we are proud to be a pioneer and have been known as one of the creators in Vietnam un-burnt building material industry- a "green", non-agricultural land use, smokeless, environmental friendly tile industry. We have various designs such as multicolor roof tiles, artistic outdoor tiles, pool pavers, garden landscaping, block tiles, indoor terrazzo tiles, pavement and driveway tiles, encaustic cement tiles and lightweight concrete products… Secoin currently is evaluated as one of the leading companies in Southeast Asia in the field of unburnt building materials with chain of 5 factories for manufacturing located all over the country. Secoin is also the only enterprise that has exported to 29 countries all over the world, focusing on high-quality demanding countries such as Japan, Australia and European countries…

Besides being directly involved in manufacture, Secoin has experienced for more than 15 years in technology transfer, un-burnt material producing equipment provision for over 50 factories in the whole country under “handy key” method. The transferred innovative technologies are from all top providers in the world such as Italy, German, Spain… Secoin has built up strong relationships with many equipment manufacturers, world-brand un-burnt building material providers. Our company always updates the latest information and knowledge in this field. Secoin also keeps track on exploring and combining with modern technologies and equipments in the world with the advantages of Vietnam such as rich raw materials, skillful workers, unique techniques of manufacture to create new products. Fresh, unique and difference are our keys of success in Vietnam as well as being in 29 markets all continentals.

Currently, our factories are running at full capacity to supply products to major domestic projects such as Vietnam's highest building - Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower (Hanoi), Yen So Park (Hanoi), Song Gia Resort (Hai Phong), Hyatt Regency Resort Da Nang (Danang), Kim Long Villas (HCMC) …

Why did un-burnt building material manufacturing become Secoin‘s direction, sir?

Firstly, un-burnt building materials don’t use burning process, which means fuel saving and agricultural land use saving. The more developed the countries are, the more un-burnt materials are consumed while it is reverse in developing countries while land in Vietnam is so precious as the other natural mining resources. Secondly, for its un-burnt feature, we can save fuel used in burning process such as coal, oil, wood… all of them are on the exhausting list. Thirdly, we can help lessen the forest exploitation and environment pollution. Indeed, the current biggest problem all of us are facing is environment pollution. To create environmental friendly products is always the most important standard to Secoin and it is the reason why Secoin has been focusing on un-burnt materials through 21 years.

Secoin is preparing for constructing new lightweight concrete manufacture factories in Ho Chi Minh, Ba Ria- Vung Tau and Hanoi with a total investment of 100 billion Vietnam dong per one. The investment would follow several stages to meet specific demand of the market in different time. Capacity of each plant in the first phase will reach approximately 80,000 m3 per year. Secoin lightweight concrete products include many kinds: lightweight block; ultra-light and high soundproof wall panels, ceiling panels, at sites lightweight concrete supplying…

Has Secoin had any difficulty in manufacturing and providing un-burnt tiles to markets, sir?

Images of red clay brick walls and red roof tiles still remain in Vietnamese minds. It is not easy to changethe perceptions and habits of consumers and we are trying our best to overcome this challenge. In the early 1990s, building materials were not popular in Vietnam market. At that time, Secoin brought un-burnt tiles into Vietnam through big projects involving foreign investment, such as five-star Horizon Hotel, Sunway Hotel, Melia Hotel. After that we came to others such as Returned Sword Lake pavement, Lenin Park, Noi Bai airport… However, un-burnt tiles have still sounded unfamiliar to consumers as it would have been.

Through 21 years, Secoin has consistently and patiently focused on un-burnt materials to help customers aware of the advantages of the products via joining seminars of Ministry of Construction and Building Materials Association of Vietnam, continuously launching new un-burnt products. In the early years , it was really hard for Secoin since the customers were not interested in un-burnt products. However, according to the social trend in general awareness on environmental protection, Vietnam un-burnt materials in general and Secoin’s in particular are gaining many positive changes from customers.

Recently, Prime Minister has gone through decision no. 567/TTG on approving the Program of developing un-burnt building material through 2020. This decision is considers a crucial change for Vietnam un-burnt building material industry in general and Secoin’s in particular.

According to you, what can enterprises do to help un-burnt materials widespread?

In my point of view, the Government should have appropriate standards and norms for un-burnt materials. This will help create a legal framework and basis so that contractors can find it easy in using this kind of materials. Besides, the State should also consider the taxation of using land in producing building materials since land resources are extremely valuable and in risk of exhaustion. Many countries have applied tariffs on land exploitation. It’s an indirect contribution to the development of un-burnt building materials.

Decision no. 567/TTG of Prime Minister on approving the Program of developing un-burnt building materials through 2020 has shown the right direction and had appropriate solutions to boost the un-burnt material consumption. However, it is the specific action of ministries and departments assigned by Prime Minister that decides whether un-burnt building materials can be widely spread.
